Budget for FY20

As we complete the 1st quarter of the school year, our efforts turn toward developing next year’s budget.  This is a long process that encourages and utilizes a great deal of public input.  Alaska is somewhat unique in that school boards do not raise revenue through applying taxes to support the district’s budget.  We rely on the State for over 60% of revenues and the Borough for over 35% of revenues.  This is why you will hear a lot about the return on investment from the district.  We believe and can quantitatively show our schools are successful.  Much of the data is available in our assessment department through the school and district report cards to the public.  While assessment results are important, we believe our students are more than a test score.  That is why, in our annul report, we highlight students, their activities, and all-around accomplishments as people making a difference in their communities.  I hope you take a look at this report located here:  http://www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=39349

I encourage everyone to participate in the budget process as we navigate through uncertain economic times.  The next opportunity for the public to weigh in will be at our December 3, 2018 school board meeting as the board takes a close look at how we staff schools, potential revenues, potential reductions and community input.  This step will start us on the path to approve a balanced budget for the Borough Assembly to review in April of 2019.
