2018 Reflection

We are rapidly coming to the end of another semester in KPBSD.  Our students and staff have experienced many successes that continue to prove that our schools provide high quality education for all.  I am particularly proud of how our staff is embracing personalized learning strategies.  This intentional process enhances teacher collaboration along with a firm commitment to provide strong, positive relationships with all of our students.  Our students are also supporting this effort by providing their voice on what school climate and culture should look like.  We have many student leaders around our district who are working hard to include all students in sharing ideas, improving school climate and supporting each other to reach personal goals.  I am pleased to see our district staff and students come together to provide an excellent education.

We still have a lot of work to do in 2019.  With the change at the state level, it will be important to provide our leaders clear information on actual results regarding student learning.  Our district’s foundation includes a rigorous curriculum, a relevant education, and strong, positive relationships.  Sometimes a standardized test score cannot adequately measure success in one of those areas.  Our district has always been about the whole child and educates our students to perform well in life, not just on tests.  We have seen some amazing results through what our graduates have been able to accomplish.  We see amazing results regarding what our current students are doing and how they are already contributing to their communities.  We are also seeing excellent growth on a wide variety of standardized tests and I am confident that our schools get excellent results across many measures.  We must continue to share our positive results, as I believe what is happening in KPBSD classrooms everyday can be the model for improvement around Alaska.
